The 2011 RRR Canadian Grand Prix was the fifth round of the inaugural season of the RRR F1 2011 Championship. It was held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, in Canada.

The race, contested over 35 laps, was won by Smifaye, driving for the Black Raptors Racing.

Report

Background

The 2011 RRR Canadian Grand Prix was contested at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, within the city of Montreal, in Canada. The circuit is located on a man-made island in the St. Lawrence River. The track is named in honour of the late Gilles Villeneuve, father of Jacques Villeneuve. The track is one of the most popular tracks on the RRR F1 2011 Championship calendar. The circuit features two DRS zones which will improve overtaking possibilities.

Cross Channel GP driver Superdelphinus, went into the race with a slender lead of just 8 points over second placed man Smifaye. The top 5 drivers are separated by less than a first position. The teams championship is really hotting up with only 22 points separating the top 6 teams.

This race will be the first race in the championship for Black Raptors Racing driver RumblyLizard. The Black Raptors team have been without a second driver until this round and are looking to take the lead in the teams championship with a strong performance this weekend.

Practice

Practice has been taking place in the week ahead of the race with many drivers struggling to find good gear ratios. The track features two consecutive DRS zones and the decision is largely based on whether drivers think they will need to use DRS to pass drivers or not.

Tyre wear has been huge in practice for most drivers with a quite dramatic fall off in grip towards the end of a stint. It will be interesting to see who can make the most of their tyres and race strategy as the winner might not neccessarily be the fastest driver.

Qualifying

Qualifying was dry and many drivers took a gamble on strategy due to weather conditions for the race. It saw a return to form from Leyton House Reloaded driver Sodamn Insane 6. After his superb second place finish at Monza the previous week he put his Mercedes onto the front row. Smifaye qualified 0.009 ahead of Sodamn Insane 6. Drivers Spearkofi and RareDevil666 both failed to set a time in qualifying. Spearkofi crashing his car within the first lap and RareDevil666 not completing a clean lap. FlavouryRug took 3rd on the grid with his best qualifying of the season just 0.2 seconds behind Smifaye and Sodamn Insane 6.

Race

The race started with the heavens opening. Most drivers started on the intermediates with a few gambling on full wets. Smifaye got away cleanly from pole position and made it cleanly around the first corner. There was chaos behind as Butler258 and F1 new boy Dan Thorn collided. Most drivers got through unharmed but some had front wing damage such as RumblyLizard who was racing for Black Raptors Racing in his first F1 race. FlavouryRug capitalised whilst Sodamn Insane 6 was struggling for grip to take second position. Meanwhile Spearkofi and RareDevil666 pitted from damage whilst RumblyLizard carried on with front wing damage believing the pit stop would cost him more time than running with low downforce.

Out in the lead Smifaye was increasing the gap to the battle between FlavouryRug and Sodamn Insane 6. The rain seemed to be getting heavier and Smifaye pitted for a fresh set of intermediates on lap 11. Most other drivers pitted around this time with only Butler258 managing to make them last until lap 18. This paid off brilliantly for the Pudding GP driver after starting 11th he was up to 7th.

The rain started to clear around lap 25 with RumblyLizard and Butler258 gambling on dry tyres the first. Smifaye then dived into the pits on lap 27 and fitted the prime tyres with the hope that they would last until the end. Leyton House Reloaded driver Y2jisaok who had been struggling so far this season then found himself in 2nd position with a quite superb drive and managed to hold this position until the end of the race. Smifaye took his third win of the season, followed home by Y2jisaok and FlavouryRug taking a fantastic third place.

Post-Race

OpenedAutumn58 was disqualified from the event due to multiple corner cutting and dangerous driving whilst being lapped.
