The 2011 RRR Malaysian Grand Prix was contested at the Sepang International Circuit, approximately 60 km south of Kuala Lumpar, the capital city of Malaysia. The circuit is a permanent race facility and was chosen to add a different track style to the season. The track features two long straights which provide good overtaking opportunities. Weather almost always comes into play at the Sepang Circuit which adds an extra element for the teams to think about.
Practice for the race was delay due to the release of Forza Motorsport 4. Many of the drivers competing were focusing on this game rather than F1 2011. This lead to drivers settings many laps in the last practice session before qualifying.
The track was dry for qualifying and everyone ran the quicker option tyres. Superdelphinus set the pace early on and retained pole position throughout the session. With quite a stunning time of 1:30.138 he was almost half a second faster than his closest rival, Smifaye. STR TommyB and OpenedAutumn58 made up the second row of the grid with Bookoi filling the last spot.
The race started under awful conditions with the heavens opening like no one has ever seen before. Many drivers were complaining about the conditions, Smifaye pleading for the start to be behind the safety car and STR TommyB saying "This the worst conditions I ever drive car". Rumours were heard that Icthyes was screaming for a clear visor.
There was contact at the first corner as four cars were seen sliding around the first two corners, Black Raptors driver Smifaye came off worse dropping down from 1st after a great get away down to 7th position. Smifaye quickly made up the lost places as STR TommyB and the drivers following him ran wide into turn 11. This left Smifaye in third position behind OpenedAutumn58 and Tomcheesey. The two Feta Motorsport drivers were leading the way until OpenedAutumn58 ran wide allowing both Tomcheesey and Smifaye through.
Tomcheesey proceeded to lead the race for quite a few laps and many of the drivers were starting to think about whether it was worth changing to the intermediate tyres. Many of the race engineers were suggesting that conditions would clear up but this proved not to be the case. The first driver to take the gamble was Shouty. This turned out to be a bad choice and was lapped on 2 occassions by the lead drivers.
Going into the last few laps of the race Smifaye decided to pit for a fresh set of wets, which turned out to be a bad choice. Both Superdelphinus and Tomcheesey chose the intermediates and were chasing him down at an amazing pace. Smifaye ran wide allowing both drivers behind. Tomcheesey and Superdelphinus then battled to the end with Superdelphinus coming out victorious and taking him first RRR win.
