Gran Turismo 6

Postby ajokay » 16 May 2013, 10:36

It sounds and looks very impressive. It's clearly the game that Polyphony wanted GT5 to be, but somehow got lost along the way.

- 1200 cars out of the box, hopefully all premium (they've had enough time by now... and it's time to stop using polished PS2 car models), with more to come as DLC
- 7 further locations with 19(?) layouts in addition to what's in GT5. Silverstone GP, National & International (aka South) circuits included.
- Menus are far more streamlined, far less cluttered, and seem to load a whole lot faster. You'll be able to control the menus using an app on your phone/tablet/laptop using simple and intuitive touch-screen interfaces before turning to your TV for the race proper. The app also looked like it let you play and tinker with your garage on-the-go.
- Vast customisation options. Far more alloy wheels, what seemed like hundreds of body kit options available to strap to any car. Some kind of livery editor was briefly hinted at, but I'd wait until some proper news on that.
- The custom track editor look vastly improved. The idea now is that there are several locations (a swathe of rolling countryside bordered by villages in the Andalucean region of Spain was shown) - and from what I could make of the feature is that you can take this several square miles of land and draw a squiggle on it. Voila. There's your track. Whether the squiggle drawing is limited to open land or whether you can draw it through the streets of these villages and give yourself a street circuit, I'm unsure. They said several locations will be on offer initially, with more being available later as DLC.
- The tyre and suspension physics have been completely remodelled, giving the cars a far more realistic feel. The cars roll and pitch and carry their inertia more realistically. It felt really good to drive the GT86 with the wheel and pedals.

I'll put a video of Dan playing the demo on YouTube later.

Turn 10 are going to have to come up with something incredibly good with Forza Motorsport 5 if they're wanting to equal this.

Yes, it's definitely going to be like a complete version of GT5 - but it's more than that. The new handling model really is incredibly realistic - the way the cars react over kerbs for instance is pretty amazing. It's going to be quite hard to play with a controller I reckon.

They're also introducing community features a la Forza with clubs and whatnot, but they also hinted at being able to actively set up championships on the game for your club to race in, which sounds like a nice, neat concise way of being able to do the races and have all the results available to view at any time.

Graphically it's not going to be much better than GT5 because they're going to be reaching the limits of what the PS3 is capable of but in terms of everything else, it's shaping up to be absolutely sublime. You can really tell that Kaz Yamauchi, SCEE and all those involved with the game really have a passion for it and care about their fanbase.

Sounds like this might actually be worth buying a PS3 for.

Thinking back to GT5, I seem to remember it being like waiting for the second coming of Christ.

I am not going to buy both PS4 and 720 so I need to decide which I go for. GT6 sounds a bit of a pull to PS4.

It's out on PS3 though - I don't think any mention was made of it being released on the PS4 too.

I believe it will be out on time this time around though - GT5 was delayed and delayed and delayed because Kaz kept wanting to make constant perfections and improvements to the point where they had to release it in an 'unfinished' state - see the brace of ports from GT4, long load and install times and the updates and addons that are still being added to the game almost three years after it's release.

GT6 is basically going to be what GT5 was supposed to be, just with a new physics engine, some tidying around the edges and new features. It wont be a radical change at all.

When they say 'out this holiday season' though I expect that'll be in Japan. We probably won't see it until April or May 2014.

Really? That's incredible if so!

Anyway, I always felt that GT5 at its best was better than Forza, it's just that those moments are few and far between. If it's 1200 detailed cars (i.e. with a proper cockpit view), menus that have been designed properly and a livery editor of some kind, then that would be enough for me. The rest is just gravy after that.

Yes, that's exactly what it is.

No idea what that makes GT5 Prologue though.

Actually, probably yes. Considering how completely different GT5 Prologue was to GT5, it may as well have been.

Is the PS4 backward compatible or will I have to buy a Ps3?

I heard that PS3 games can be streamed via the Internet, but I can't remember the details.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One are moving from PowerPC to x86 architecture processing so neither will be backwards compatible unless they make some form of emulator. But this seems very unlikely.

The original XBox was x86, so it's not like MS don't have the tech. Sony do too, as both PS1&2 are MIPS.

New suspension looks stupid but other than that this looks like it's motorsport motorsport which is what I want. Really don't want to buy a PS3 though as I'm likely to buy a PS4 at this moment.
