[AMS] Special Event 71 - Automobyelista

Postby shaxberd » 06 Aug 2019, 19:36

Welcome to our off-season special event for the summer, Automobyelista!

Time flies, doesn't it? Almost 4 years ago, we ventured into Reiza's simracing titles for the first time, and since then, have run a total of nine seasons and 16 special events using their games, ranging from touring cars to V10 open wheeler goodness all the way to trucks. But alas, all things must come to an end, and with 2019's last season and next year's GEARS effort set to run on rF2 and Reiza's own next title in the works and scheduled for a late-2019 release, it's time to wave our goodbye to AMS for official competition - while it will still be available for club racing and special event requests, CATS was the final series to run on it, so let's give it a proper farewell!

The event will be held on Sunday, 18th August 2019, with the following format and session start times:
Practice - 30 minutes beginning at 19:00 BST
Qualifying - 15 minutes beginning at 19:30 BST, superpole conditions with two hotlaps
Warmup - 5 minutes beginning at 19:45 BST
Race 1 - 30 minutes beginning at 19:50 BST with a standing start
Race 2 - 30 minutes beginning at 20:25 BST with a standing start, top 8 from R1 reversed
Bonus: Warmup - 5 minutes beginning at 21:00 BST (see below)
Bonus: Race 3 - 10 minutes beginning at 21:05 BST (see below)

The Track

The one that got away! When we voted on the HBTM tracks back in 2016, some people decided to give a certain Campo Grande a shot instead of a classic like Curitiba (or its hotter sister, Goiania) - so if we turn back the clocks, we might as well right some wrongs and give Curitiba, a RlyR veteran, another go!
Image
But wait, there's more! In the unlikely event of a tie on points, neither race time nor finishes will matter - in this case, there'll be a third, very sprinty race (half points!) with the current point standings determining the grid (with usual tie breakers in place, ironically). However, said race won't be around Curitiba, oh no - welcome back to Campo Grande!

The Cars

Again, we're looking back at our first Reiza season for this one, but in the meantime, there's been an update introducing the 2017 Chevrolets to the game, so we're not going fully retro for this one: We'll be running the Chevrolet 2017 Stockcar!

The Liveries

Liveries are optional for this - feel free to run a stock livery, but you're welcome to paint your own one as well. The template files are available here:
DOWNLOAD

No mandatory elements to the liveries, just keep your sponsors within the usual guidelines and supply your livery files until the 16th at the latest.

Reckon the old HBTM liveries would work on the contemporary cars?

Also, out.

Going to try and make this but will have to just run a random car. Also anyone have a baseline setup for this car?

@Sam Hill, @Mike Bell and @Lin1876 failed to determine a clear winner at Curitiba, so one final race at good ol' Campo Grande it was! Congrats on the event win, Mike!

Thanks for racing everyone, that was fun for one last time at AMS - I'll miss it.

One word - underperformed.

I definitely had the pace, and the fact I managed to get my very first Realish pole position here is solid evidence of that. This however gave me nothing, as the iPhone that I had tethered decided it doesn't want to cooperate anymore. A couple of TS disconnets/reconnects, 1000+ ping and being generally distracted by on and off blue flags, my name jumping up and down the leaderboard as the game kept gaining and losing server sync I eventually was spun by @shaxberd who couldn't even see my car attempting an overtake. A huge shame, as I matched the pace of the eventual winner @Sam Hill

DNF and a lot of concern about how can I achieve a stable connection - currently it seems to be a choice between shared home network that tends to disconnect randomly from servers and 15% chance of massive lag via tethered smartphone.

Race two went slightly better, but I lost way too much ground with an awkward, failed attempt at turn 1 defence that saw me spinning on lap 2. Eventually clawed back a P4 which isn't a bad position by all means, but there definitely was more to achieve.

Campo Grande went Campo Grande, spun again on my 4th lap there ever and then picked up the pieces of other people spinning and crashing.

Strange night. Talk about win it or bin it.

Race 1
Started 6th. On lap 2 I dropped it out of the final corner and ruined my car. AFter a lengthy pit stop for repairs, I came out and had decent pace but was too far back to challenge, though other peoples' problems promoted me to 6th.

Race 2
Made a reasonable start from 3rd then after @shaxberd made a mistake I found myself in the lead! @Mike Bell got past after a few laps but he wasn't really able to pull clear and after a few laps I managed to capitalise on an error and re-take the lead. I fully expected Mike to be all over me but while he wasn't using all of his tricks, I had legitimate pace and when he made an error with a couple of laps to go, it was just a case of not making mistakes to win!

Race 3
I knew I needed to win this race to have any real shot at the overal event win. I made a decent start but made a small error to let @fjordnet through. I was trying to fight back with push to pass but got greedy, spun and smacked a wall. I contined hoping for a miracle but my engine blew a few laps later. DNF

These cars definitely felt better than HBTM and I was really surprised at my pace in race 2 - I never dreamed I'd come out of tonight with a race win! A nice way to round out the SCE/AMS era.

Last minute shift change at work meant I could make this. Much more enjoyable than I remember HBTM being.

Good to get a win in race 1 and hold on in race 2 to take it to the tiebreak. Unfortunately I was too much of a pussy to use push to pass and once Mike got past I tried too hard and binned it.

Still, a good laugh and a considerably better result than I deserved for rocking up after having not driven a sim in months. Hopefully won’t be as long until my next appearance.
