Special Event 69 (nice) - The 8th Annual Cruddy 250

Postby camp_bell » 22 Apr 2019, 21:12

Do you feel the Need for Brylcreem? Do you watch Grand Prix starring James Garner literally every night? Do you think that being splattered across the track at 150 mph is an acceptable risk? This is the Cruddy for you.

Car Formula Vintage V12 1967 (body 1)
Track Indianapolis 500
Distance 250 miles (100 laps)
Date 28th April 2019
Livery deadline 27th April 2019 @ 22:59

The Format
Practice 18:00 (1 hour)
Qualifying 19:00 (15 minutes, last chance to join the server - you have 4 qualifying laps, out lap, warm-up lap, 4 qualifying laps, outlap). The aggregate of your four qualifying laps determines your grid position.
Warm Up 19:15 (10 minutes)
Race approx 19:30 (100 laps/2 hours) from a rolling start behind the safety car.

The Car
Formula Vintage - 1967 V12 because no wings and V12. Templates on the FTP. Use Body 1 if you download from elsewhere.

Even though it was acceptable for The Flinstones to advertise cigarettes in the 60s, tobacco and firearm sponsorship are forbidden. Simple liveries are encouraged.

The Track
Indianapolis. ON the FTP.

You (indirectly) asked for it - this was a club race that raced very well and people asked for it to be an actual race. The Formula Vintage has no wings, a massive fuck off engine and drivers with massive balls. It's 250 miles of Indianapolis in 60s death machines, first person over the line takes the celebratory swig of milk* and the #1 for next year's race. Yes, this race really is the wasp's nipples.

*bonus banter point if the winner shows us a video of them taking the swig of milk and puring it over themselves

Will we be allowed to refuel during the race? (The Default for Formula Vintage is no refuelling)

Searched for the 1967 Indy 500 entry list and checked to see if anyone ran the number 3. How could I, in good conscience, not recreate this with a Realish twist for Special Event 69 when it was driven by someone with the name Gordon Johncock?

Livery pack on the FTP. This also includes an update to increase the fuel tank to 250 litres, which should be enough to last the race (thanks @lemming77).

Seems like there might be an issue with Steam's server lobby/list - if you cannot see and join our server in-game and/or via the "View>Servers" menu item, enter it manually in-game:

Woah.

Missed Q like an idiot. First and foremost thank you admins and all for letting me grid-start, I would have been last otherwise IMO.

Decent start, capitalised on mistakes from others, had an uncharacteristically incident/mistake free race. Caught @TheGwiiBird in the end, had an amazing slog with him which ended in utter banter. .048 separated us in the end, with me in P6 and Will 5th.

For a race that I thought was going to be an absolute disaster after missing quali, this went well. Fought hard and fought until the end. Not quite Gurney, but sure as hell good.

This was really something special! Managed to set up a grounded, stable car that felt great to drive and gave me a lot of confidence.

After some crazy position changing at the start we unfortunately tangled with @lemming77, sending me to the back of the pack with a loose, bruised car. Which was still super enjoyable to slide around, so I wasn't even mad :P

What followed was two intense, long, close battles for position, first with @craighypheno, then even longer one with @MrRandom287, ultimately decided by lapping @sin_racing 's slipstream advantage for me. But after that, my aggressive, heavy-redlining gearing came back to bite me, causing the engine to expire on lap 66, so I didn't get to complete my recovery drive.

Congrats to the winners! Video of the last two laps incoming ;)

Dayumm that was a sweatfest.

First non-sprint race with RR (not counting my 3 laps of my only gears race) and first oval race ever.

Quali - 8th, glad to not be last

Race - great scrap with Matt for the first quarter, then on my own for most of it, with @Kosumo reeling me in from about lap 50. Then fatigue set in and Josh caught me with 20 to go, almighty scrap ensued and I somehow kept 5th by 48 thousandths (!!!)

That was really good. I had decent pace to qualify 5th and I was in the battle over the podium in the early stages before it all got a bit close with @artanonim and @lemming77 and I had a spin, thankfully not hitting anything through blind luck.

From there, it was a recovery drive but my pace was good enough that I quickly made my way back up to 4th. @lazaros18 was just too far ahead and slightly quicker though, so I couldn't make any more progress.

Thanks everyone for turning out. I wanted to do something a little different for Cruddy this year and I'm glad it went down well.
