HELP!

Postby Mr Flobadob » 09 Feb 2016, 11:04

So this weird thing has happened a couple of times now with my (Windows 7) pc when booting up.

Firstly it sticks on the "starting Windows" screen for a few minutes.

Then I get this: Image

After another couple of minutes this loads up: Image

And then not long after that I get this: Image

After another few minutes of that the desktop loads up and everything works fine.

Had a Google search with not much luck so......any ideas?

When it's booted up, press Win+R and type in msconfig.
Let me know what is in the "Startup" tab and also what is left in the "Services" tab after putting a tick in the "Hide all microsoft services" tickbox. Chances are its going to be something in those hogging some resources.

OK. Try unticking all of the ones circled. Most should start the service when its needed anyway when you run it so it doesn't need to be hogging anything at startup. If you still notice something you use doesn't work afterwards, just re-enable it.

Also, you should check the "Startup" folder in the Start Menu and delete anything you dont need from there.

If it still does it, then might need to look at some other stuff.

Sounds like it may be hard drive failure then if its all on the same drive.
And if theres some windows bits on that drive too, then would explain the odd startup.

What is your hard drive setup like? How many/type/what's on each one?

Well the one that's been removed (e) is the huge hard drive with all my games on. That's basically all I've put on there.

The other one (c) is the smaller one with just documents and videos etc on it.

EDIT: I did a system restore back to this morning (only option that was given to me) and it popped up as if I'd just plugged it in.

Very occasionally (it's happened a total of maybe 3 times I the last year) my Steam-laden SSD disconnects itself. No idea why, it just ejects itself like you would a USB stick. Maybe it's a similar problem? No idea about the start up issue though, unless something is going wrong in BIOS and getting the hard drives in a twist.

Check your boot order in BIOS, and boot in safe mode, see if problem still persists. If it does, disconnect all drives but OS and boot into safe mode again.
