I've done my past few on CS2 (with a bit of CS6) as I tend to do the initial layout at work on CS2 then if it needs tweaks after checking in-game, I'll use CS6 on my home machine. Nowt wrong with CS2 really though. Just missing a few features. Thought I would post this as I am sticking CS2 on my work computer now anyway.

For the sake of completeness, you're supposed to own a valid CS2 license to use those CS2 downloads, though there is obviously no way of checking that because the whole point of them is the fact that Adobe wanted to shutdown their activation servers.
Also, if you hit Esc fast enough and stop that linked page from redirecting, you can skip the Adobe ID registration thing

For those not using Photoshop, here's another alternative to Paint.NET and/or Gimp: Krita
Haven't checked it out too much, but it seems to support a fair bit more than the other two, e.g. Layer Styles (e.g. Colour overlay), Vector layers. Not sure about Alpha channels, might be in there, as well. Well worth a look, although you'll still have to export to PNG and then open it up in Paint.NET for DDS conversion or the like.
Also, Affinity are currently porting their sensibly-priced photo/designer software to Windows, so it's definitely worth keeping an eye on that, too.

The beta is now available for free.
In other news, there's a rather impressive web-based PSD editor available, as well - full support for text layers, layer styles and all that, leaving alpha channels (probably) as the only thing missing. Not bad at all for a web app. Obviously no DDS support, but you could always export to PNG and let Paint.NET do the rest. PhotoPea.
