CruddyCar World Series 2 - Discussion

Postby camp_bell » 27 Dec 2021, 15:22

Rather than having individual threads for each race, this season we will trial a unified discussion thread and a separate stewarding thread.

As most of you will know, most informal discussion happens on our Discord server. If you’re not already a member, you can click here to join.

Sorry to those I held up when getting lapped - I had to do a last-minute wheel rim change owing to a loose steering boss, and the rim I swapped to would intermittently press all buttons, so I'd be parked on an apex and suddenly have the pit limiter on and potentially be in a terrible gear as well.

Slightly disappointed with 7th in the end considering I led at the start and was just off the podium battle at the last restart, but I just didn't have the pace in the final stint. A good battle with @Lemm314 near the end though.

Also, please pay attention to the game's instructions - the closed pits are clearly communicated in particular.

On this point from my stewarding verdict, my understanding was we could pit for repairs while the pitlane is closed. Should we wait until they're open in future?

We flicked through your race up to that point but it didn't look like you made any contact in the incident that caused the caution?

That asterisk on the closed pit is (in my understanding) for major damage, i.e. if you don't repair it you are a hazard to other cars. Usually the cars that caused the caution meet this.

The incident happened in front of me and I coasted through it without getting collected by any cars, but I heard a bonk and ended up with blue damage and a small amount repair time according to the HUD, so I assume I hit some debris. I wasn't sure how to tell if it was enough damage to make the car unstable at racing speeds, so pitted to err on the safe side.

the way I view closed pits is that whilst you can pit on that lap, ultimately you should get penalised by the game and this would be applied through the onscreen instructions (and start at the tail end). Whilst ultimately this didn't work out this time because the game screwed up, imo there is nothing with someone choosing to pit prior to the pit lane opening as a rule of thumb (we would likely take a dim view if they stayed out and cause a pile up because they had damage on the restart) although if they do they should re-start at the back of the pack regardless of the on-screen instructions. Any out of position penalties on the restart can then be cleared by an admin.

Apologies for the start problem today - that's on me not testing enough. We'll test the remaining tracks to make sure tonight isn't repeated. Thanks to @Goobertson for quickly finding a solution, and also @Steve Wood and @Lemm314 for helping make it work.

Anyway, my race was hit by my piss-poor qualifying where I just couldn't find the time. This meant I got delayed on the first lap, but I spent the first half of the race near @shaxberd before I spun and he hit the wall.

After my pit stop, I jumped Bjorn and the two-stopping @Steve Wood and was on course for a fairly comfortable 7th, but a silly spin at turn 11 put Steve on my tail and he got past when I had a moment a couple of laps later. Happy to survive for 8th without needing to repair damage during the race, but without the poor qualifying and the spins a top 6 was a possibility.

Pretty happy with my qualifying, especially after last week's disaster - 5th was probably the highest I could get.

I made a good start but understeered into @MrRandom287 at turn 1, which ironically probably saved us both from worse damage when @TheFinalSystem spun across the field. I ended up in the train for 4th but a couple of spins and errors dropped me back. I made progress through other peoples' incidents and I was just preparing to pit to change my ruined tyres when I locked the rears into turn 5 and lost my front wing against the barrier.

Thankfully I was able to go to the end after my pit stop and the final third of the race was an intense battle with the two-stopping @Sam Hill. He came out of his stop just ahead but we were very close, even with separate simultaneous spins at turn 5. I'd just got the gap back under 2 seconds with a few laps to go when I braked too late for turn 5 and spun trying to slow it down, so had to settle for 6th.

Another fun race but again I was hurt by silly errors, as 4th was a possibility without the mid-race crash. On to Long Beach!

Thanks to everyone for racing this season, and congratulations to @TomParker for winning the championship and @Goobertson winning Cruddy.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the season. I've wanted to revisit IndyCar for some time and while the timing was a bit unfortunate, with S397 releasing an official mod in the middle of our season, and it wasn't to everyone's taste, I had a lot of fun.

If anyone wants to share any congratulations or feedback, please do so below. And remeber we have GEARS going on with a race next week, Bon Anni 11in a couple of weeks, and the next season will be announced soon. See you all on track soon!
