Coppa di Corsa Formula Italiana, also known as Formula Craig is the 56th Realish Racing Special Event, and the first special event by club veteran Craig Woollard. This event will take place on Automobilista and will feature the Formula Retro cars around Imola.
Get out your insane wigs, your glorious cassettes and your brown things. Taking some inspiration from last year’s Formula MEME, it is time to head back into a time machine once again.
The year in 1972, and we have acquired numerous Formula Retro cars from that era, and have access to this relatively new track in Italy just outside of Bologna, named after Dino Ferrari. Therefore we shall race around this new track, which is fast. Unbelievably fast. (We’ll be using the 1972 layout of Imola if you haven’t worked it out yet.)
Oh, and whoever ends up the grass verge at Tosa first in each race gets a slow clap, or a Badge of Shame. Whichever they prefer.
This special event will use the Formula Retro car around vintage Imola.
- Practice - server open the week before.
- Qualifying - 30 minutes, max. of 12 laps, 19:30 BST.
- Warm Up - 5 minutes, 20:00 BST.
- Race One - 36 laps, 20:05 BST.
- Race Two - 24 laps, 20:50ish BST.
The 30-minute session featured a format new to Realish Racing with a 12 lap limit for each driver. The session, however, was compromised due to a timing glitch, which resulted in some drivers being permitted fewer laps than intended. The biggest name to lose out from this was Lee Harrison, who was disqualified from qualifying. At the end of the session, Jay Cooper of The Defenders beat Unified Petroleum Autosports' Kyran Parkin by little over two tenths of a second. Cooper’s stablemate James Price-Harper of the sister team The Offenders was third ahead of Mike Bell and the Kaibutsu Racing pair of Campbell Wallis and Allie Ferrie.
Cooper led from the start, ahead of Parkin and Price-Harper. The top three pulled away at the front until the leader was struck with a graphical issue. This handed the lead to Price-Harper, who was chased down by Parkin for much of the race. At the halfway point of the 36-lap race, Price-Harper crashed out, handing a substantial lead to Parkin, who would take honours at the conclusion. Behind Parkin, some 50 seconds behind, was his team-mate April Dillon, who inherited second place after Wallis made an untimely error. Harrison took third place from the back of the grid, with Cooper recovering to fourth after losing his rear wing.
The second race featured an all-Scottish front row, with the Scottish National Party’s Neil Heatlie starting on pole due to the reverse grid rule ahead of Wallis. Wallis led from the start, while Heatlie’s race would be ended prematurely after spinning off and being hit by Craig Woollard. Wallis dominated for much of the race, but a spin, and later a crash would see him drop back behind Cooper, Parkin and his team-mate. It was a bittersweet victory for Cooper in the 24-lap sprint race, after the circumstances surrounding the first race. A mistake on the final corner from Ferrie would hand second place to Parkin, who would take the overall victory. Wallis finished third, just ahead of Bjorn Golda.
